119) A New Baby

At the latter end of 1994 we got a very excited telephone call from Jonathan in Australia. He and Sian were going to have a baby. We were thrilled at the thought of becoming grandparents and I suppose about that time the thought that we might like to go and live in Australia started to take root in our minds. We did not think it was a possibility though. Not long after that phone call from Jonathan I got a card from Sian telling me how she was feeling and about her plans and hopes for her coming baby. I remember it was an Anne Geddes card. I had never seen them before that and was tickled pink with it. When ever I see any of Anne Geddes cards I still think of the lovely card from Sian and how pleased I was to know that I was going to be a granny.

When Dominic came out of the army he was made redundant by his company and had rather a hard time finding steady work. He went through a period of different jobs. He worked in one factory that made the soles for rubber boots and another that made crisps and snacks. He was never without work for long but was dissatisfied and restless. He had thought a lot about going to Australia to visit Jonathan and Sian and the news that he was going to be an uncle made up his mind for him and he left for Australia early in 1995. He had a one-year working visa so we did not expect him back until 1996.

I did miss not being able to be close to Sian while she was pregnant but she was very good about sharing her ‘baby’ with us she sent us copies of the scans and wrote often to keep us up to date with her progress. She was still working in a restaurant at the time and was named The Sydney Morning Herald’s “Best Apprentice” for 1994 but gave up work to have her baby. The restaurants industry’s loss was certainly her family’s gain.

On 15th March 1995 Claudia was born. She was a beautiful baby and she grows more beautiful with each passing year.

My new grand daughter
